“Is that all there is?” a musical performance by MATERIAL HUNTERS within the frames of MAUDI Live Action. “MAUDI” multifunctional space for Contemporary Art, Tbilisi; 2021
The performance is built on layered audio material, incorporating sounds of everyday environments - subway, wind, street noise. Within this soundscape, recordings of my own voice and composed music emerge.
The body responds to the sonic environment spontaneously, without pre-determined structure. During the process, the phrase “Door? Door? Where is the door?” repeats, functioning as a search for an exit.
The work emerged from the difficulty of integrating into a new environment and from gendered experiences that shaped the perception of movement and presence within space. Disorientation here is not only spatial, but also social and projected onto the body.
When the pre-recorded material comes to an end, a live vocal begins. The voice gradually detaches from meaning and shifts into a non-verbal state. The transition from text to a wordless sonic field marks the culmination of the performance.
Voice functions as a tool for orientation and for searching for an exit.
