“HOLY SLIP” New Year’s Eve Group performance Theatre Company Haraki, Tbilisi; 2021-2022
A durational night performance staged on New Year’s Eve (December 31 - January 1) in a theatre located in the city center. While celebrations were taking place in other parts of the building, we slept on stage.
Intoxicated visitors entered the space intermittently and observed the sleeping bodies. The gaze was directed at bodies that did not respond and did not perform. The work explored the body in a state of passivity and refusal. Sleep functioned as a gesture opposing the imperative of celebration, activity, and participation in collective festivity. In this way, a slight temporal shift was created - an alternative rhythm that resisted the dominant logic of the holiday.
Pre-recorded photographs and videos were projected on screens within the space. These fixed images coexisted with the real-time stillness, creating an imitation of dreams.
The work addresses participation, agency, and modes of existence within collective time.
