About
I’m Tamara Maghlaperidze a Kutaisi-born, Georgia-based performance artist, and the co-founder and scenographer of the Performing Arts Laboratory.
My artistic practice explores the relationship between the body, memory, time, and social reality. I am interested in performance as a way through which “სინამდვილე” (sinamdvile) - a Georgian word closer to an underlying or inescapable truth than to “reality” - can reveal itself in its beauty, violence, and uncanniness. While realities can be multiple and constructed, “სინამდვილე” (sinamdvile) refers to something that exists beyond subjective perception, even when obscured by social, political, or psychological structures.
My works are rooted in personal experience and in the intersections between natural, political, and social phenomena. I use my own body as the primary medium, treating it as a sensory field in which surrounding processes become physically manifested.
In several performances, I have worked with the figure of the snake as an avatar through which the boundary between human and non-human dissolves. This figure exists outside social expectations and gendered forms of control, allowing the body to operate beyond imposed identities and systems of self-rejection.
My installations often incorporate natural materials - stones, sand, branches, water - elements connected to archaic forms and the material memory of the earth.
